释义	亚美利哥意大利航海家。1499～1504年，先后为西班牙和葡萄牙政府服务。其间曾3次或4次去南美洲探险。经实地考察，他确定所见到的大陆不是亚洲，而是一块“新大陆”。后来，世人即以亚美利哥的名字，称新大陆为亚美利加洲，简称美洲。
